RANDOLPH, Vermont (VTC) – Saturday Sept 9th at the Vermont Technical College Maple Syrup Challenge, VTC senior Rebecca Broadbent (North Dighton, MA) led the Vermont Tech Women runners to a strong 3rd place finish against Middlebury College, Southern New Hampshire University and University of Maine Augusta.
Rebecca ran the Vermont Tech 5K course in a blistering 19:27 for fourth place overall, rewriting the records books by erasing 45 seconds from her previous best 5K time last year. Rebecca ran with the lead runners throughout the course, and finished just behind third place runner Kate MacCary of Middlebury. Helping carry the Women's team to 3rd were Jocyndia Turinetti (Randolph, VT) in 24th, Alissa Cote (Danville, VT) in 26th, Haley Allard (Tyngsboro, MA) 27th, and Emily O'Neill (Grand Isle, VT) 28th.
UMaine Augusta also competed in the women's race. UMA Moose senior Carmen Bragg notched a 25:16 followed closely by sophomore Shauna Riordan in 25:44. Caitlin LaFountain rounded out the women's side in 30:05.
In the Men's 8K race Vermont Tech also finished in 3rd, and were lead by Mathew Kelly (Fort Kent, ME) with a time of 33:10 for 28th place. Matt was followed about 2 minutes later by a pack of teammates in the next three finishing spots by Michael Dunkle (Tunbridge, VT), David Mattern (South Royalton, VT), Allan Wheeler. Rounding out the team scoring was Jonathan Puffer (Groton, VT) in 34th, followed by Samuel Stocks (St. Albans, VT) in 36th. UMA finishers included sophomore Sam Gerken who finished strong in 32:08.
Next week Vermont Tech travels to Middlebury VT to take part in the Aldrich invitational.
