11.01.08 | NHTI-CCC's Searles Captures National Title

Heather Searles of the NHTI, Concord's Community College women's cross country team has captured the USCAA women's individual national title.  Searles won the 6K race with a time of 24:44:17, eight seconds ahead of the second place runner.

With only minutes to go in the USCAA Cross Country National Championship race at Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista, VA, Searles was trailing but looking strong.  As the end of the race neared, she turned on the jets and was able to pass the previously undefeated Samantha Shead (Penn State-WS) for the win.

"It was an emotional event seeing Heather cross the finish line just ahead of all of the competition especially since she was not the favorite to win," said NHTI-CCC assistant cross country coach Perry Seagroves.
