Southern Maine CC Number One Seed in USCAA DII National Basketball Tournament
Newport News, VA –The 2015 USCAA Men’s Division II Basketball National Championship selection were revealed and Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Southern Maine CC earned the #1 seed for the 2015 tournament. The tournament will run from March 3rd-7th at the Penn State Fayette Main Arena and Maltho Gymnasium.
Southern Maine CC earned the top seed with a 23-3 and a 16-1 YSCC record. The Seawolves are ranked in the top 10 in five USCAA categories including number one overall in rebounds per game with 46.1 and offensive rebounds per game averaging 17 per game. Southern Maine CC will be led by 2015 YSCC All-Conference Sophomore Atencio Martin he leads his team with 14ppg and Rebounds per game. The team will also be looking to sophomore guard Jordan DeRosby who leads his team in assist and sophomore Forward Tyheem Simon currently averaging 11 points per game. Southern Maine CC will take the Maltho Court on Thursday, March 5th at 5:30pm as they wait for their opponent.
#8 Warren Wilson will be led by Senior guard Ty Johnson averaging 20 points per game and Sophomore forward Thomas Hay will be helping out on the boards as he leads his team in rebounds and blocks. The #9 seed is a conditional bid based upon the outcome of the 2015 PSUAC championship, as of now the bid belong to Penn State Mont Alto. The Lions will be led by junior forward Sharif Welton, who is averaging 15.6ppg and senior forward Jeremiah Mitchell who is averaging 15.2ppg. These two teams will match up on Wednesday, March 4th at 8pm in the Main Arena, with the winner advancing to the next round to take on #1 Southern Maine CC.
2015 YSCC Conference Champions, #6 College of Saint Joseph’s (VT) will also be joining Southern Maine CC from the YSCC Conference. This year’s team will be led by 2015 YSCC All-Conference Senior Dre Anderson he leads his team in scoring, averaging 17ppg. Anderson is also in the USCAA top 10 in 3 points made and total points. Senior Forward Kashean Alston will need to be watched on the boards as he leads his team in Rebounds and is 4th in the USCAA for offensive rebounds and 10th overall in total rebounds.
College of Saint Joseph’s (VT) will take on the #3 seed Central Penn College who lead the USCAA in Point per Game and are also #2 in Rebounds per game. Central Penn College will be led by 3-Time USCAA All-American Devon Dorsey. Tip-off is set for Thursday March 5th at 12:00pm in the Main Arena
Earning the #7 seed of the tournament is YSCC member Maine-Machias. The Clippers will be led by Junior guard Antwan Ruise he lead his team in scoring averaging 15ppg and is 8th in the USCAA in field goal percentage hitting 59 percent from the floor. Junior center Ivory Sneed is averaging 11ppg and is 2nd in the USCAA in field goal percentage with an impressive 63 percent from the floor and Senior Forward Floyed Higgins will be helping out on the boards as he leads his team in rebounds.
Maine-Machias will face off with a tough Penn State Fayette who earned the 10th seed of the tournament. Not only do Lions have home court advantage they also rank #1 in the USCAA for points per game and field goal percentage. The Lions will be led by Senior Forward Matt Mckenna who is averaging 22.5ppg and hitting 52 percent from behind the arc. This game will be played on the first day of tournament play Wednesday March 4th at 6pm in the Main Arena.
The winner of the #7 Maine-Machais and #10 Penn State Fayette will advance to the next round to take on the #2 seed Berkeley College-NY. The Knights lead the USCAA in Steals per game and ranked in the top 6 in four other categories. The team will be led by Kenton Chan-Man who leads his team in scoring averaging 17ppg and Stephon Jennings who leads his tam in rebounds and blocks.
Other Teams rounding out the National tournament are #4 Johnson & Wales-Charlotte who is undefeated in USCAA play and lead by Junior Forward Rickey Porter who leads his team in scoring and rebounding. #5 Penn State York who are ranked in the top 10 in several categories including 4th in the USCAA in 3 point Field goal Percentage and lead by Lucas Jewel who leads the team in Assists and Top 5 in the USCAA in Steals. These two teams will match up on Thursday March 5th at 3:15pm in the Maltho Gym.
