AUBURN, Maine - Second-seeded Central Maine Community College defeated seventh-seeded Vermont Technical Institute 83-61 Friday night in the first round of the Yankee Small College Conference Elite Eight Tournament hosted by Central Maine Community College. The Mustangs advance to play Southern Maine Community College tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
Despite the final score the game included four ties and eight lead changes in the first half, and the Knights trailed by only two, 34-32 heading into the locker room led by 12 points from Logan White (South Royalton, Vt.) who missed only one shot from the floor in the opening half. VTC's Taylar Marston (Mount Barker, South Australia) hit a bucket to start the second half to tie things up at 34-34, but CMCC answered with a 12-4 run highlighted by eight points from Carrington Miller (Bingham, Maine) who led the Mustangs with 22 points and 10 rebounds on the night.
CMCC's Pietro Badalassi (Canberra, N.H.) netted 20 points and six rebounds while Rob Skinner (Winstead, Conn.) was also in double-digits with 10 points as well as seven rebounds four assists and six steals.
The Knights were led by Tarre Plowden (Camden, N.J.) who scored a game-high 24 points while White scored 17 and Robert Holliday (Kansas City, Kansas) scored 11. CMCC had the edge in rebounds with 42 to 34 for the Knights. The Mustangs also received solid bench support with 23 points.
